“Morocco is such a beautiful place. It’s incredibly beautiful. And also it is the captivating place… ” Fatema Mernissi

Why visit Morocco

We talked about going to Morocco for years and finally did it two years ago. We were not disappointed! What an exotic country! Where else will you see thousands of storks nesting in ancient ruins or goats expertly climbing the argan trees to eat their favorite fruits?

Make sure to ride a camel in the Sahara Desert. Many people love it, but it was a little scary for me.

The colors and styles of Moroccan clothing vary from one area to another. Majority of men and women wear djellaba – a long, loose, hooded garment with long sleeves. The hood protects from the sun or cold. Some people favor kaftans, which are like djellaba but not hooded.

Our guide told us a little secret: people might wear their ratty house clothing, but before leaving their house they will put djellaba on to look decent.

You will see plain black or white djellabas and kaftans in one area, or black clothes with intricate decorations in another part of the country. In the towns next to the Sahara Desert, we saw men wearing royal blue kaftans with the turban of the same color.

You will see miles and miles of date palms growing around oases. After driving for a couple of hours from Fez, we stopped at a small resort town in the mountains. This town looked like it was transferred to that place from Switzerland. This is the last thing we expected to see after a week in Morocco.

If you are a shopper, you will enjoy wandering through the narrow, winding alleys of the ancient souks (markets). Fez and Marrakesh are the best cities for this kind of shopping. Don’t forget to bargain with the vendors!

In Morocco, you will eat the best couscous with chicken, lamb, or vegetables. The traditional Moroccan soup harira (often served for breakfast) is unusual but delicious treat after your morning cup of coffee.

Casablanca will impress you with the Hassan II Mosque. It is one of the biggest mosques in the world with capacity 105,000 people. From its promenade, you can see sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Tip

Make sure not to miss the heavenly experience of the hammam (spa). Ask your hotel to help you make a reservation for the hammam, where the staff speaks English. You can bathe by yourself, using black soap, exfoliating glove, and bucket with water.

Your experience will be more authentic (but more expensive) if you hire an attendant to take care of you. You will be scrubbed all over, sent to the shower at the right moment, scrubbed again, and given a massage.
